Saidi Kanda comes from a Tanzanian family with traditional musical heritage. Giving himself the title of ‘The Bush Technologist’, due to his extra-ordinarily creative ability to make quality instruments from oil cans, old radio and wireless components and many other items he discovers or seeks out, Saidi has won international awards for his musical prowess. He has played with the likes of; Remmy Ongala’s Super Matimila (Tanzania), Kizibo and Biashara Jazz Band (Dar Es Salaam), Orchestra Baboma, Moses Fan Fan’s Somo Somo and famous American singer Grace Jones, to name a few.

Saidi is a multi-instrumentalist and has recently released the album he made as part of Mvula Mandondo, titled ‘When Rain Falls, The Beans Grow’.

 

As well as performing, Saidi also runs workshops for percussion and traditional instruments and has appeared on ITV and Sky TV demonstrating the traditional music of Tanzania.

 

 

In his latest collaboration with Legacy Film, Saidi will provide the live musical score to Oscar Micheaux’s 1920 seminal film ‘Within Our Gates’, treating the audience to the enchanting sounds of his homemade and self titled instruments the; ZeZe, Marrimba, Chirrimba, Edungu, Ridungun and what will quite possibly come to be called the Edumbe. This is what truly makes Saidi The Bush Technologist.
