A short documentary by Tim Reid of Legacy Media Institue, highlighting the life of Oscar Micheaux and his key achievements.
The first African-American to produce a feature-length film (The Homesteader, 1919) and a sound feature film (The Exile, 1931). His films were a challenge to segregation featuring non-stereotyped black characters; they also frequently addressed more controversial issues. He wrote, produced and directed over 40 films from 1919 to 1948, although only 10 of his film are known to still exist in print.
Oscar Micheaux's second film in 1920 portrays the contemporary racial situation in the United States during the early twentieth century. It is said to be his most seminal piece and a response to D.W. Griffith's ‘Birth of a Nation’. Micheaux's film attempted to challenge Black stereotypes portrayed in Hollywood. Produced, written and directed by Micheaux, it is the oldest known surviving film made by an African-American director.
